Christmas…it’s always had a special place in my heart. I loved it as a kid and the kid in me still does. I must admit it’s not only the celebration of Christ’s birth, but all the trappings of the season: you know, lit up decorated fir trees, carols, excited kids, decorated streets and stores with the theme of the season (and maybe snow, if we’re lucky.) There are even some good TV specials and old flicks this time of year, like “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “White Christmas”. I also know there are many people (including Christians) who think this time of the year is too commercialized. Of course, they are right, but why let that put a wet blanket on ones enjoyment? There are even some who think Santa is the devil: you know…taking the lime light away from the baby Jesus. Did you know that if you change the letters of SANTA around you get SATAN? Crazy.
I cannot help but believe in the spirit of Santa. His character and deeds are based upon St. Nicholas, a historical Christian man who gave out gifts to children….it’s quite true. Here’s an idea on how you might want to go about looking at the Christmas season. Picture a big round target with three concentric circles: Santa, reigndeer, lighted fir trees and even secular Christmas songs and such make up the outside ring. Family gatherings, friends, giving of presents and such make up the second ring. And…you guessed it, Jesus at the center is the ultimate focus. You don’t have to negate the other two when you put Jesus as the center.
What say you? I say, “Merry Christmas!” I’d like to see your thoughts on this subject.
P.S. Here’s a great article I came across that further expands on my thoughts. Just click on the name to take you to the site.
